When my grandma moved, she gave me her old kitchen table. It looked like this- sans bench. It was sort of banged up, but overall in good condition! Since our current kitchen table totally didn’t go with the fresh colors of our new house, I decided I was going to refinish it and give it a new look.
Here is the old table…
Oy, this is awful- for real! We were definitely ready for a fresh new look.
I don’t know why I forgot to take a photo of the before but it was probably because the table was already in pieces from the move. First things first…. choosing a stain color.
Oh, and make sure if you ever use this stuff, make sure it’s in a well ventilated area or you will be high as a kite on fumes. I got dizzy with my garage door wide open- this stuff is super toxic and I can’t even believe it was necessary for them to write ‘ harmful if swallowed.’ OBVIOUSLY!!!!!! I sanded it with 220paper and got to work!!!!!
This is after one coat. Mind you, I did SEVEN. I’ll spare you the play by play.
This was pretty much the last coat and what the true color ended up being:
The chairs were NOT fun to do at all. It’s impossible to get the stain even between the spindles and they looked nasty before I went and detailed all of them.
Gross. I got some basic white paint at Lowes and repainted the legs and all. of. the. spokes. I never ever want to do that part again! I wanted a bench to go with our set so I ordered one at online and stained it to match… it came out a little darker but oh well.
Here it is… all done!!!!
So much better, I think! My little buddy approves :)

This turned out great. Great way to re-vamp a table :)

It looks great!! I love the way the stain looks - that's my favorite stain color (although I've never actually use it for it's intended use, lol)! Chairs do such - real bad. But they turned out great!

ReplyDeleteWe did the EXACT same thing to our EXACT same table! Sooo much better than the dated light wood!!
ReplyDeleteWow! I can't believe the improvement. I totally hear ya sister about the old dark "mini" table. We are starting to move towards more white and my old dark table is driving me Ca-RAZY!

ReplyDeleteIt looks great! I have a similar table and have been wanting to paint my chairs white and stain the top of the table a darker color but I keep putting it off. Painting the chairs does not look fun ;)

It looks great! Question for you, did you sand it by hand, or use a belt sander? Getting ready to do my dining room table next weekend. :-)
